    Description

From 1963, an empty 4/5-quart capacity holiday decanter, made for bottling of Four Roses blended bourbon whiskey.  (Sale of straight bourbon whiskey under the Four Roses brand was discontinued in the US in the late 1950s.)  This bottle is in very good condition, with no scratches, cracks, or chips.  The neck label is intact, although there is light scuffing where the tax stamp was applied.  The front "label" is imprinted on the glass.  A "spotting lug" is molded into the glass at the base of the bottle, opposite the front label.
The bottle is described in a holiday print ad as a "Florentine decanter fifth."
Embossed on the base of the bottle: “Federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle"; the Distiller Code D126 (Seagram, owner of the Four Roses brand between 1943 and 1999); and the numbers 4, 6, and 63.  "63" is the year of manufacture; "4" is probably a bottle-maker's permit number, and "6" may be the manufacturing mold/cavity number.  The glass maker's mark is indistinguishable, so it's uncertain who the manufacturer was.  There is speculation that it may have been Thatcher, but I can't confirm it.
This decanter measures just over 11-1/2 inches tall with the stopper, 9-1/2 inches tall without.   At its widest part, the container measures about 4 inches in diameter.  Weight is about 1 pound 8 ounces with the stopper.  The cork on the stopper is clean, sound, and not brittle, although a crack has begun to form near the base (See Photo 5). The cork measures one inch in diameter.  The glass portion of the stopper shows no defects.  A portion of the tax stamp remains on the top of the closure.
This attractive 58-year-old decanter is clean inside and out.
