  • Condition: This handmade chessboard has been totally refinished. The quality of this chessboard and it's design was so distinct and well made, that it was worth my time and expense to refinish it. It has 10 coats of protective lacquer on the chessboard top, and 6 coats of lacquer on the bottom supporting structure.Hand rubbed lacquer would have been the finish used when this chessboard was originally built (Probably from the 1940's). The boarder trim was replace as the original trim was partially missing. I faithfully reproduced the trim in size and wood type (walnut). The drawer works very well and the red felt that cushons your chess pieces is perfectly clean and in excellent conditon. There is no indication of wear at all on the red felt. I applied four coats of lacquer to the underside of this chessboard, simply to seal the wood and protect it for another 70 years.

    Description

    This is probably the finest original Ming chessboard you will ever see.  The exception might be if you found one locked away is a safe or vault somewhere (for the past 60 or 70 years).  The grain of the chessboard squares are all in absolutely perfect allingment.  As a builder of chessboards (around 100 of them), I know how difficult it is to find grain that perfectly matches, even if it comes from the same board. The light squares are mahogany, and the dark squares are walnut.  The grain is superb with both the light and dark squares.  Each playing square is 2 inches square.  The overall size of this chessboard is 24 by 24 inches.  The border (or playing margin) is 3 5/8 inches wide on all sides.  The border is red oak. All of the woods used in this chessboard work perfectly together, as they are in the same tone values.  As previously stated in the condition's section, the trim around the edge of the chessboard was partially missing.  I reproduced it in the same width and wood type (walnut).  I also left the lip of 1/16th of an inch proud of the top.  Because this is a floor playing chessboard (should you choose to play it on the floor), that small margin of height keeps your pieces from falling off.  Of course, this chessboard can be played on a table as well. The height from the bottom feet  to the top of the chessboard is 6 1/8 inches.  Note the sweeping curve of the legs.  This makes this chessboard graceful and elegant.  This chessboard is both beautiful and structurally solid as a rock.
