Description
James Watt Kelly was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1844. When he reached the age of 19, he emigrated to the U.S. through New York and eventually to Nashville, Tennessee. By this time he had achieved quite a knowledge of distillery products. A couple of years later, he travelled to Chattanooga to collect a debt, liked it and stayed. In 1866, he established his distillery bottling for several different labels. The business' name was J.W. Kelly and Company. He dominated the trade with his ingenuity, and in 1880, he operated his own saloon on Market St. in Chattanooga. Kelly died in 1907. Soon after, Tennessee's AG brought the company to court for selling liquor in a dry county. Then the Prohibition Era shuttled the company, and with the deaths of the owner and top execs, competition overtook the company within a few years after Prohibition ended. The company revived the successful recipe in 2017, and is back to making their quality products.
This is a beautiful amethyst purple color bottle. On the face, is embossed in slug printing, "J.W. Kelly & Co. Distillers Chattanooga, Tenn.". On the bottom is a "C" in a diamond, which is the symbol for the Chattanooga Glass Works. This company was started in 1901.
Bottles turn this attractive purple color due to the manganese reacting with the sunlight. This old bottle features the characteristics of uneven glass, and internal bubbles. The bottle is a quart size and is 9 1/8" tall. The bottle is in very good condition. It could use an internal cleaning as it has a rusty stain. The bottle has absolutely no chips or cracks. The exterior is completely smooth.
