Description
7.5 inches high. Hallmarked "12" and "L" on base (silver content and makers initials). Hebrew blessings of the end of the Sabbath are engraved on each side, the door reads in Hebrew "The Year 1836". The book photos are from the Israel Museum, which shows another example of this spice tower with identical hallmarks and engraving by the same artisan. The second-to-last image shows another example of this spice tower from 1872 which sold for ,500 (,000 hammer + 25% buyers premium). The last image is from the December 14, 2014 sale at Sotheby's where this tower was offered at a ,000 - ,000 estimate. So, pros and cons: Pros --- 1) My tower is a very early example, it being dated 1836 in Hebrew on the door, as opposed to the 1872 date on the flag of the 12.5k example 2) My example is identical to the one from the Israel Museum (same hallmarks, design, engraving). Cons --- 1) My example is missing the bells with hooks attached. 2) Someone, over 100 years ago, reinforced the top area corners with silver solder, likely due to those areas thinning from wear from being handled every week for decades (family heirloom etc.). The little door that opens and closes is a bit bent.
Examinations / pickups in person are welcome, I am in New York City.
